Lewis Hamilton is hoping that Red Bull’s decision to demote Daniil Kvyat and promote Max Verstappen will not hurt either drivers.
Last week Red Bull announced that Kvyat would be replaced at Red Bull Racing by teenage racer Verstappen.
The Russian driver’s demotion was blamed on his failure to cope with the pressure while it has long been speculated that it was only a matter of time before Verstappen moved up to the senior team.
Red Bull’s decision has divided the paddock with some openly saying it was a harsh call on Kvyat’s behalf as he was on the podium two weeks prior to his Russian disaster.
As for his thoughts, Hamilton said: “I think ultimately it’s a good opportunity for one, and for the other it’s unfortunate.
“Red Bull has done well in bringing young talent forwards, but I think they need to be aware that young drivers need time to progress, mistakes do happen.
“There’s so much pressure on drivers at a young age, especially when you’ve not done a lot of years in lower classes, there’s so much to learn, a lot of pressure on young shoulders.
“To take a driver out of a role in a team he’s comfortable and move to another one it’s a difficult position to be in.
“Do I agree with it? It doesn’t matter, but it’s not something I would do.”
In a rather light-heart moment, Fernando Alonso was asked about Red Bull’s decision.
His response: “They changed the drivers?”
